A+ Inspiration for Your Home Interiors and Exteriors
Looking for fall painting ideas to help you give your home a refresh this season? Autumn is a time of transition, as evidenced by all the gold you’ll soon see covering Colorado’s aspens — if yours aren’t yellow already! It’s also a great time of year to paint your home inside and out. Milder weather makes for great exterior painting conditions and the kids going back to school gives you a little extra time to focus on readying your interiors for the winter ahead. We’ve crafted a list of both fun and practical ways to take advantage of the changing season and transform your home with the power of paint!
Fall Painting Idea #1: Design a Creative Study Space for Your Kids
Getting kids to sit still and focus on homework can be stressful when there isn’t a designated study space in your home. Transform an unused guest room into a creative space to learn and grow with reading nooks, desk space and inspiring color. Don’t have an entire room to give up for a study area? You can still use paint to create the feeling of separation, like turning an alcove or unused corner in the living room into a desk area and painting the walls with a contrasting color from the rest of the room. Think outside the box when creating your vision.
Unique Places to Add Study Areas
- Alcoves
- Under stairs
- Modify built-ins like entertainment centers and cabinets
- Unused/walk-in closets
- Basements
- Attic nooks
Speaking of color, you get to design the aesthetic of your study area and color selection is the best place to start. Color really can impact the mood of your child’s study space, so decide ahead of time what you think will work best.
- Use blues and greens for calm and focus. They are also linked to creativity and inspiration.
- Use yellows and other citrussy shades for energy and mental stimulation.
- Reds and pinks can also work, but careful selection is important as red can be intense for a study space.

Fall Painting Idea #2: New Year, New Grade, New Room
The back to school season is really exciting for kids, especially those hitting big, new milestones. Every new grade is something to look forward to, but the transitions from elementary school to middle school, and middle school to high school, can feel like a really big deal. We complete a lot of bedroom painting projects for kids before the school year starts. Like new notebooks, backpacks and shoes, there’s something about a bedroom upgrade that makes kids feel special.
Our most common kids’ bedroom paint upgrades include:
Repainting Baby and Toddler Rooms for the “Big Kid” Transition
It’s certainly sad to cover up those cute baby animals you painted on the wall of the nursery, but you’ve got a big kid now! As kiddos head from babies to toddlers to preschoolers, parents can usually keep the same paint color and most of the decor. Once the little ones make the transition to “big kid” mode, however, you may hear a lot of protesting about teddy bears, baby ducks and soft, pastel colors.
Celebrate their big changes with new colors that fit the unique interests and hobbies they’re developing as they become their own person. Back to school season is a great time to help them start off their newest stage in style while still honoring the “kid” part of big kid. Whether that’s bold primary colors, soft pastels or a backdrop of subtle neutrals.

Elementary to Middle School Room Repaints
Middle school is a tricky season for parents to navigate because your kids are growing so fast! Young adults start clamoring for independence and you may have a few clashes about the final color selection. Your tween or new teen wants an all black room, you want to be able to minimize the impact of repainting over black paint … The key is to help them feel like they’re leaving the “big kid” days behind and help them feel happy about their newer, older space.
You should be able to help your tweens and young teens find a color that fits your comfort level without restricting their creativity too much. And remember, we can paint over black paint when they grow up and move out on their own.

Middle School to High School
High school is a time where teens love to flex their independence — usually by hiding out in their rooms. Why not make the place they’ll spend most of their time truly special? Redecorating at the beginning of the school year can make the transition to the final phase of their teen years a special memory. Not only that, your teen has been changing so rapidly through middle school that they’re sure to have new tastes and a new idea of what they think will be cool.
Help them find a color that fits their personality and allows them to really embrace their individual style. This is a time in their lives where expressing themselves is important and something as simple as paint color can really create a space they love to spend time in.

Fall Painting Idea #3: Get the Exteriors Bus Stop Ready
This back to school fall painting idea is for the parents. You may not get to experience the excitement of showing off a new outfit on the first day of school, but you can enjoy a refresh on your home exteriors with new house paint and deck and fence stain. We love helping homeowners get their exteriors ready for winter weather (and those harsh Colorado UV rays). Homeowners love knowing their asset will be protected while also getting a great new boost of curb appeal.
This season is also one of the best times of year to paint the outside of your home or give your fence a much-needed re-stain. You can learn more about why here, but our top favorite reasons are the milder weather and easier scheduling.
Places to Upgrade this Fall
Whole-home exterior painting: Get the whole home done in one efficient project. AMC Painting typically includes minor caulking and repairs to trim during the process, which gives you added peace of mind and another task off your honey-do list. Check out some inspiration from top colors our customers love:
Deck restaining: Get your deck weather-proofed and ready for snow and deep, dry cold temperatures with restaining.
Fence staining: Protect posts and fencing from wood rot and UV damage and add a nice new hue to your landscape. Staining can keep fencing from rotting — which leads to blowing over when high winter winds hit! We love these classic stain colors:
