Get Your Home Destination Ready: Staycation Color Inspiration from AMC Painting

Create a vacation destination you’ll love to come home to every single day with staycation color inspiration from AMC Painting. We know not everyone chooses to travel when summer comes around. Maybe you can’t get the time off work, have committed to an entire season of baseball for the kids or simply don’t want the hassle of airport security, traffic and crowds. However, just because you can’t (or don’t want to) leave the house this summer, doesn’t mean you can’t bring the things you love about traveling into the comfort of home. We’ve created three different palettes of vacation-inspired color ideas to help you transform your home into a staycation retreat you can visit 24/7/365 — advance booking not required.

A Hue with a View — Rocky Mountain Color Inspiration

If you want to bring home the color inspiration of your favorite Colorado campgrounds and outdoor spaces, you have a wide variety of hues to choose from. There’s a reason the state is affectionately known as “Colorful Colorado.” From the burnished sandstone of Garden of the Gods and Red Rocks Amphitheater, to the deep, vibrant greens of aspen and pine, your palette options are endless. For that staycation-worthy, just cracked a cold drink next to the campfire feel, we’ve pulled color ideas from the majestic mountains — green, rust, gray, gold and even a little bit of white for those famous aspens. Check out some of our favorite Rocky Mountain colors:

Use these colors inside and out to bring the Rockies home. Greek Villa SW 7552 offers a sunny, papery white reminiscent of the sweeping trunks of the aspens. It will give the room a warm, open and airy glow that just might feel like the sun when it warms your tent early in the morning. For dramatic impact, check out Rookwood Dark Green SW 2816. This deep, forest-green hue is part of Sherwin-Williams’ Historic Collection and offers unique options for an interior statement wall, exterior siding or a welcoming front door. Pops of toasty Wheatgrass SW 6408 or Red Cent SW 6341 can add drama and interest to any space and bring some of the beauty of our fruited plains and red sandstone to your space, too.

Take a Trip to the Tropics, Right at Home

A cruise to the islands may not be on the horizon this summer but you can still bring the feel of the tropics home. These beach-inspired hues bring the tropics straight to you. Create resort-style accommodations that you never have to leave behind — because they’re already right there in your living room, bedroom, backyard or any other place where you want that staycation feel. Like the Rockies, sandy beaches and exotic locations offer boundless color options but there’s also a playful element that adds excitement and a bit of whimsy. Think citrusy pops of green, yellow and orange, paired with muted earthy tones, surprising pinks and, of course, a vast array of blues to reflect oceans, waterfalls and cloudless skies. Let’s explore some island color inspiration:

Tropical colors are bold and bright and very, very forward. The trick to using them properly is knowing when to go big and knowing when a little bit will go a long way. You want to cultivate the island feel, but you also want to get along with the neighbors and the HOA (if you have either). That means it’s probably not the best idea to apply Exuberant Pink SW 6840 to every inch of siding on your two-story suburban home. However, it might be a great color for a statement wall in a paradise-themed guest room. Or, use it to jazz up a small alcove or area behind built-ins like bookshelves. Citrus Blast SW 6906 makes a brilliant front door color that really stands out without overwhelming. Colors like Sandbar SW 7547 create neutral contrasts that balance, anchor or even highlight flashier selections.

Create a Relaxing Oasis with Spa-Inspired Paint Colors

Bring the tranquility of your favorite spa into some of your favorite spaces at home. These retreat-inspired colors are designed to help you relax to the max. Color plays a huge role in the spa experience and it is key to creating the retreat/staycation aesthetic. It can completely transform the energy of any room, bringing calm and serenity that is truly restorative into your home. Wellness retreats pull in airy, understated, earthy colors to help cultivate a meditative, calming space, like dreamy grays, sandy taupes and grounding tones of brown, black and stone. If you could transform any room in your home with a spa aesthetic, the bathroom would probably be first. After that, the main bedroom is a clear favorite. Shades like Natural Linen SW 9109 and Repose Gray SW 7015 create a dreamy, tranquil foundation for your home retreat. Use them in bathrooms and bedrooms to make rooms feel relaxed and inviting. The best spas incorporate the natural world into the space and you can reflect that care and effort with your own thoughtful color elements; a warm brown like French Roast SW 6069 for accents and trim, or a dramatic anchor charcoal like Iron Ore SW 7069. The key is to use colors that bring you a feeling of calm and make your home feel restful.

Other Ways to Add Vacation Ambiance

In addition to upscaling your home with fresh paint, there are a few other ways to create the right staycation atmosphere.

  • Update your yard with a patio refresh! Give that faded decking new life with a new coat of stain, try out concrete staining, add new plants or comfortable furniture.
  • Turn the mood up (or down) with enhanced lighting like landscape lighting, patio lighting or exterior soffit lighting. Permanent LED lights let you change colors, create patterns and create the ultimate ambiance for your at-home escape. Check out our lighting division AMC Illumination for some great ideas for lighting up your yard in style!
  • Add small touches like new art or updated bedding. If you can incorporate souvenirs and reminders from your favorite destinations, all the better!
  • Enhance the experience with music using small wireless speakers around the home or yard.
  • Use scent warmers and room sprays to complete the vibe. Think pine for a woodsy feel or cedar for the spa aesthetic.

Create a Space that Fits Your Vibe

Whatever the reason you’ve decided to invest in your home and give it a fresh new look, it’s important to love your space! These colors aren’t the prescription for a perfect home. That comes from you and your vision. They’re inspiration to help you find the staycation palette that brings your favorite destinations back to you.
